About AncientOlympia.com

An independent guide to one extraordinary sanctuary, written for people who want more than a quick photo stop.

AncientOlympia.com exists because the birthplace of the Olympic Games deserves more than a rushed walk between a coach and a gift shop. It is an independent travel guide covering the sanctuary of Zeus, its museums, the village of Archaia Olympia and the corner of the Peloponnese around it — written to be genuinely useful before you go and while you are there.

What we cover

  • How to reach Olympia from Athens, Katakolo, Patras and Pyrgos, with realistic journey times and costs.
  • Which tours and tickets are worth booking, ranked honestly and updated as ratings change.
  • What to see in the sanctuary and the museums — and beyond, from Kaiafas to Bassae and Nafplio.
  • Where to sleep, so you can be at the gate when it opens.
  • When to come, and what each month actually feels like on the ground.

How we research

Opening arrangements, ticket prices and journey times are checked against official sources, transport operators and booking platforms, and reviewed regularly. Tour ratings and review counts come directly from GetYourGuide; hotel scores from Trip.com. Where a figure moves around — ticket prices, bus fares, taxi rates — we give a range and say so, rather than pretending to a precision that does not exist.

Where we express an opinion, it is an opinion. We tell you when an excursion is rushed, when a ticket is not worth prebooking and when the cheaper option is the better one.

How the site is funded

We are a GetYourGuide affiliate partner and a Trip.com partner. If you book a tour or a room through a link on this site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the only way this guide is funded — there is no advertising, no sponsored placements and no paid inclusion in any ranking. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

Prices change, hours change, hotels change hands. If something here is out of date or wrong, please tell us — we would rather fix it than defend it. Write to us on the contact page.

Plan your day at Olympia

Stand where the Olympic Games began

Walk through the vaulted tunnel into the original stadium, stand beneath the fallen columns of the Temple of Zeus and meet Hermes of Praxiteles in the museum. Compare guided tours, tickets and shore excursions and book in a couple of taps.
