The green stadium of Olympia beneath Kronion hill

Best Time to Visit Ancient Olympia

April–May and late September–October, without hesitation — but here is the month-by-month detail.

Olympia has a Mediterranean climate with an inland twist: hot, dry summers, mild wet winters, and a green, flower-filled spring. The site is open all year. The short answer is April to early June, or mid-September to October — warm, green or golden, and with the long summer opening hours.

Spring: March to May — the best of the year

The valley is at its greenest, the Judas trees flower pink among the ruins, and daytime temperatures sit in the low to mid-20s. From April the site switches to its long summer hours. May is close to perfect, though cruise season is in full swing — visit early or late in the day.

Summer: June to August — hot and busy

July and August regularly reach the low to mid-30s and the stadium has no shade at all. Go at opening time, carry water, and save the air-conditioned museum for midday. August is the busiest month, with Greek holidaymakers joining the cruise crowds.

Autumn: September to November — the other sweet spot

From mid-September the heat eases, the sea on the Ionian coast is at its warmest, and the light turns golden. October is our favourite month: comfortable, calm, and noticeably quieter once the cruise schedule thins.

Winter: December to February — quiet and green

Mild but often wet, with short winter opening hours that close the site in the mid-afternoon. The reward is a sanctuary you may have almost to yourself, and a reduced ticket price. Many hotels stay open; some seasonal tavernas close.

The day matters as much as the month. Olympia’s busiest hours are set by the cruise ships at Katakolo. Check a port schedule (search "Katakolo cruise schedule") and aim for a day with one ship or none — or simply arrive at opening time, ahead of every coach. The easiest way to do that is to stay the night.

The Olympic flame lighting ceremony

A few months before every Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the Olympic flame is lit at the Temple of Hera using a parabolic mirror and the rays of the sun, in a ceremony performed by actresses dressed as ancient priestesses. The tradition began with the torch relay for the 1936 Games. The ceremony is a public event but tightly managed — the site is closed to regular visitors on the day, and the dress rehearsal the day before is often the easier way to watch. The next lighting will be for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games, expected in spring 2028; dates are announced by the Hellenic Olympic Committee.

When to avoid

  • Midday in July and August. Mid-30s heat and no shade in the stadium.
  • Mid-morning on multi-ship days. The busiest hours at the site, from roughly 09:30 to 13:30.
  • Flame-lighting days. Wonderful to see, but the site is closed for normal visits.
Plan your day at Olympia

Stand where the Olympic Games began

Walk through the vaulted tunnel into the original stadium, stand beneath the fallen columns of the Temple of Zeus and meet Hermes of Praxiteles in the museum. Compare guided tours, tickets and shore excursions and book in a couple of taps.
