South of Olympia, on the Gulf of Kyparissia, Kaiafas Lake is a coastal lagoon fed by thermal springs and cut off from the Ionian Sea by a band of pine forest and dunes. Beyond the trees runs one of the longest sandy beaches in the Peloponnese — the natural place to cool off after a morning in the ruins.
The area is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network. The sulphur springs, linked in myth to the centaur Nessus, supported a spa on a small island in the lake for generations; its operation has been intermittent in recent years, so check locally before planning a thermal bath. The beaches along this coast are also nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles.
