Katakolo

The cruise port for Olympia

Katakolo is a small harbour town on the Ionian coast of Ilia and one of the busiest cruise ports in Greece, because it is the closest port to Ancient Olympia — about 35 km away. On a busy summer day several ships may be in at once, and the quiet town fills with passengers heading for the coaches.

Most visitors go straight to Olympia, but Katakolo itself is pleasant: a seafront lined with tavernas and shops, a museum of ancient Greek technology near the port, and beaches a short ride away. If you have a long port call, you can see Olympia in the morning and still have time for a swim.

What to see at Katakolo

Take a shore excursion to Olympia

The main event. A guided excursion, a shared minibus or a simple transfer all work — see the options below and our ranked comparison.

Visit the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology

Near the port, this museum shows working reconstructions of ancient Greek inventions — automata, clocks and machines. A good option if you stay in town.

Swim or stroll along the coast

Beaches such as Agios Andreas are a short taxi ride from the port. The seafront tavernas serve fresh fish and cold drinks within sight of your ship.

How to get to Katakolo

  • To Olympia by excursion: about 40 minutes each way; excursions typically last 4–5 hours in total.
  • By taxi: taxis wait at the port. Agree the price, including waiting time at Olympia, before you set off.
  • By train: a tourist railway via Pyrgos has run only intermittently in recent years; do not rely on it.

Insider tips

  • Book your excursion or transfer ahead on busy days — demand far outstrips supply when several ships are in.
  • Allow a safety margin: aim to be back at the pier at least an hour before all-aboard.
  • Check whether your excursion includes the site ticket; if not, bring about €20 per adult or a card.
  • Wear good shoes and bring water — the site is walking on gravel, much of it in the sun.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Olympia from Katakolo?

About 35 km, roughly 40 minutes by road.

Is it better to book a ship excursion or an independent one?

Independent shore excursions are often cheaper and smaller. Reputable operators plan around your ship’s times, but ship excursions guarantee the ship will wait if they run late. Book the one you are comfortable with.

Can I visit Olympia on my own from Katakolo?

Yes, by taxi or a pre-booked transfer. Agree the price and the return time in advance and keep a generous margin before all-aboard.
